Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (> www.les-plus-beaux-villages-de-france.org/fr/) has named Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère as one of the country’s most beautiful villages – and with good reason! In this picturesque village on the banks of the river Vézère you’ll find a quaint café with bakery, a labyrinth of medieval houses with narrow streets, a 14th century Manor House, a cocktail bar, and no less than eight lovely restaurants ranging from a self-service café by the river to the superb gastronomy restaurant “Le Petit Leon”.
Saint-Léon sur Vézère’s Dhagpo
Maison Chamenon is located on the elevated Côte De Jor. On this hillside also lies ‘Saint-Léon sur Vézère’s Dhagpo’, one of a vast community of Tibetan Buddhism spiritual centres spread across France. Whether you’re simply curious, or to explore meditation or are seeking answers to life’s deeper questions, this local spiritual centre offers a wonderful opportunity for you to come into closer contact with yourself, making for a holiday experience that truly rejuvenates mind, body and spirit.
ACTIVITIES
Sport-lovers are spoiled for choice with a multitude of hiking and mountain bike trails in the local area. Or to discover the most beautiful spots by water, go canoeing on the Vézère.
Centrally located in the Périgord Noir, many of the “must see & do” attractions and towns are within an hour’s drive of the villa. For the more active, there’s a fantastic choice of walks and cycle routes, as well as canoe hire companies just a minute’s drive away.

Maison Chamenon and the surrounding environment offer the ideal setting for a relaxing and rejuvenating getaway. Start your day with a steaming mug of coffee on the villa’s beautiful terrace as you soak in the stunning panorama of rolling hills and countryside. Fancy a freshly baked baguette and croissants for breakfast? The local bakery is less than 5 minutes’ drive away or 30 minutes’ walk. In the heat of the day cool off with a dip in the villa’s generously-sized swimming pool before lying back in the sun with your favourite book. Conclude your day with an evening meal on the terrace accompanied by a breath-taking sunset, followed by a nightcap under the star-studded night sky. Or if you prefer, venture from the secluded paradise of Maison Chamenon to visit the village of St Léon just 3 km away, where you’ll find an extensive choice of dining options from riverside cafes to a delicious, culinary dinner at ‘Le Petit Léon’.

Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère
Situated in the Dordogne’s ‘Golden Triangle’, Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère has much to offer with its caves, castles, picturesque villages, mouthwatering food markets and a number of must-see places within an hour’s reach such as the city of Perigeux and towns of Sarlat, Montignac, Le Bugue and Terrasson.
Saint Léon sur Vézère, just 3 km from the villa, is considered one of the most beautiful villages of France. This Périgord Noir medieval village with its softly coloured masonry, slate roofs, maze of couredous (narrow streets) and the winding, tranquil river simply oozes with charm. The village offers a wide choice of restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes and budgets. And every Thursday evening in July and August the village’s pétanque ‘aire de jeu’ undergoes a transformation, as long tables are set up for the Marché Gourmand. Take your own plates and cutlery, select your choice from the variety of food and drink stalls, and find a seat at one of the communal tables from where you can enjoy your meal and the evening entertainment.
Montignac
Montignac, 15 km away, is the nearest town. It offers a wide choice for all your basic needs, including a large supermarket, an organic store, a pharmacy and more. It’s also home to the world famous Lascaux caves, with beautiful paintings from the Upper Paleolithic period estimated to be 17,300 years old. The old town is a maze of streets with half-timbered houses from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. With its twice-weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year, Montignac is also one of the the places where you can rent a canoe to start your river adventure.
Sarlat
Thanks to modern history largely passing it by, Sarlat is a beautifully preserved example of a 14th century French town. In 2002 the historic centre, with its 77 protected monuments, was added to France’s potential list for future UNESCO World Heritage nomination. This medieval town is a gourmand’s paradise, hosting a market with regional products on Wednesdays, and again on Saturday mornings at the full market. Buy a pastry from one of the stalls and sit in one of the cafes with a coffee, watching the world go by.
Périgueux
Périgueux is the administrative capital of the region, renowned for the striking Saint-Front cathedral with its domes and turrets. The Gallo-Roman Museum Vesunna contains an excavated Roman house with remains of baths and mosaics. The Périgord Museum of Art and Archeology has ancient objects, African sculptures and modern paintings. Throughout the summer mime and street theatre festivals and concerts are held in Perigueux, and there are of course wonderful markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
